Description

A glass plate image of a certificate from the wonderful Poole Collection is todays offering! Interesting that the quotation on the certificate should have been penned by an English Lord! Given that we are almost 120 years after the centenary of the 1798 Rebellion this must seem to be a bit of an anachronism?

[/photos/beachcomberaustralia/ Beachcomberaustralia] identified the passage as that from Lord Macaulay's 'Lays of Ancient Rome'. And [/photos/91549360@N03/ O Mac] confidently suggests that the man pictured is Fr John Murphy; a leading figure in the United Irishmen during the 1798 rebellion. He also suggests that some of the other imagery (burning church, 'that guy napping') relate to Murphy's death. For our own part, we think the hill and tower pictured (top right) could be Vinegar Hill and its windmill....
