Description

Basalt lava flow in the Pliocene of Wyoming, USA.

This is a famous outcrop of the middle portions of a thick basalt lava flow in the northeastern portion of Yellowstone National Park. Many basalt lava flows have or include regularly-spaced, vertical fractures called columnar jointing. The above photo shows basalt having an irregular fracture pattern - this is called the entablature.
