English: Sculptured Figure on the entrance tower of the Great Pagoda [Brihadishvara Temple, Thanjavur]. Close view of sculpture at the base of the gopura. 'Many details regarding the building of the Temple are inscribed on the basement, which is especially well designed. The inscription is in Tamil… The figure is that of a Dvara-palagan or doorkeeper. He has four hands, with two of which he invites the worshipers to enter, while the others are held up in a cautionary manner to warn them not to draw near presumptuously'. |
