Enver Pasha (1881 –1922)

Ismail Enver Pasha (in Turkish: İsmail Enver Paşa), was one of the “Three Pashas”, a triumvirate of senior officials who ruled the Ottoman Empire during World War I. In 1918, he leaded the Young Turk Revolution, a political reform movement. He also became the main leader of the Ottoman Empire in the Balkan Wars, but specially during World War I. With a coup d’état in the early 1913, Enver became the Minister of War, forming the triumvirate in 1914, ruling the Ottoman Empire until the end of the war. Enver Pasha was the most powerful pasha among the triumvirate, and decided to involve the Empire in World War I on the side of Germany. Although before WWI he was known as "the hero of the revolution", and even Turkey was known as “Enverland", he was the direct responsible of the Armenian Genocide, causing c. 1,500,000 casualties in massive executions. After the war, he travelled to and was told by Lenin to suppress the Basmachi Revolt. Instead, however, he made secret contacts with some of the rebellion’s leaders and, along with a small number of followers, defected to the basmachi side, becoming their leader. On the summer of 1922, while celebrating a holiday the Russian forces launched a surprise attack. In a cavalry charge, Enver was killed by Russian machine-gun fire.
