Summary edit

Description

If it is not infested by Chilean Needlegrass in Canberra then its infested by African Lovegrass. Introduced. warm-season, perennial, fibrous, tough and densely tufted grass to 1.3m tall. Leaves are variable, from spreading to erect and blue to dark green. Flowerheads are dark olive-green open panicles with hairs (if present) restricted to the axils of the main branches. Flowering is from spring to autumn. Widespread along roadsides, creeks and in overgrazed/poorer ground cover pastures. Drought resistant. Introduced for soil stabilisation; common on sandy or shallow, low fertility soils. A prolific seeder that is an aggressive invader of poor pastures on sandy low fertility soils; capable of forming dense monocultures. Quickly goes to flower, becoming unpalatable and very low quality when mature. Control requires an integrated approach, often combining hygiene, herbicides, grazing management and pasture sowing. Maintain healthy pastures and prevent seed spread to minimise invasion. In infested areas, graze heavily over spring to autumn to maintain young leaf; it is palatable and can have high

crude protein levels at this stage. Supplemetary feeding of livestock is required from autumn to spring to enable them to utilise the hayed off poor quality foliage.
