Summary edit

Description
English: Erie O. Van Brocklin House, 50 Orton Place, Buffalo, New York, June 2021. Built in 1887, the house is a work of the locally-based architectural firm of Swan & Faulkner whose trademark whimsical and richly detailed take on the Queen Anne style is very much in evidence. The projecting front gable is bedecked with decorative half-timbering that presages the Tudor Revival that would come to the fore a half-century later, surrounding a quadruple window that's framed by stepped corbels that double as brackets for the vergeboard. Underneath, a second-floor balcony sits atop an enclosed sunroom while, to its left, an interestingly designed six-light second-floor window centered by an arc formation crowns a half-width, semi-enclosed, deeply recessed entrance terrace. The house's original owner was the very distinctly monikered Erie Ontario Van Brocklin (1843-1908), whose professional vocation evolved over the course of his tenure in the house from the Buffalo Fire Department, for whom he worked as an assistant engineer and secretary, to the Mutual Life Insurance Company, where he was a salesman specializing in real estate. Van Brocklin lived in the house until his move to Auburn, New York in 1901, where he accepted the position of librarian at the state prison there.
