Description

A 2 quilómetros de Serpa, encontra-se a maior elevação da planície alentejana: a Serra de São Gens. É aqui que se ergue a Ermida de Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe, no local conhecido como "Altinho".

Simples e modesta no seu estilo mudéjar, é desprovida de tesouros arquitectónicos ou riquezas decorativas; a sua beleza vem da alvura das paredes caiadas de branco, que reflectem o sol abrasador deste Alentejo quente.

No interior, pouco iluminado, um pequeno altar guarda a imagem, ainda mais pequena (cerca de 30 cm de altura) da santa padroeira, responsável pela festa mais importante do concelho, realizada na altura da Páscoa.

A Festa de Nossa Senhora de Guadalupe começa na Sexta-Feira Santa e termina na terça-feira seguinte, no Altinho. Nestes dias, é lançado fogo de artifício, há um cortejo etnográfico e exibem-se os grupos corais da região. É típico desta festa ir para o campo comer um ensopado de borrego confeccionado à moda do Alentejo.
