Description

A ermida de S. Rafael está replecta de recordações históricas. Mandada erigir pelo 4º conde da Vidigueira, D. Francisco da Gama, para ser depositária da imagem do santo que acompanhou Vasco da Gama à Índia.

No século XIX, a ermida foi profanada e caiu em ruinas. A imagem foi transferida para o Recolhimento do Espírito Santo. Aquando da trasladação dos restos mortais de Vasco da Gama para o Mosteiro dos Jerónimos a imagem acompanhou-o como já antes o fizera nas suas viagens e onde ficou colocada, sendo mais tarde transferida para o museu da Marinha.

Em 1912, a ermida foi restaurada pela Câmara Municipal que, mais tarde, nos anos 80 mandou restaurar também o seu interior. <a href="http://www.cm-vidigueira.pt/conhecer/ermidas" rel="nofollow">www.cm-vidigueira.pt/conhecer/ermidas</a>
