Das Erpeler Wappen

auf dem Mittelgiebel des Rathauses zeigt im roten Schildhaupt die drei goldenen Kronen der Hl. Drei Könige, deren Reliquien nach der Legende 1164 auf ihrer Überführung nach Köln in der Erpeler Kirche ruhten.
Das schwarze Kreuz auf silbernem Grund verweist auf Kurköln, wozu Erpel seit Gründung des Ortes gehörte.
Die gekreuzten goldenen Schlüssel auf blauem Grund stammen aus dem ältesten Erpeler Schöffensiegel und bezeugen die Herrschaft des Kölner Domkapitels von 1167 bis 1803.
Als "Freie Herrlichkeit" war Erpel nie weltlichen Herren hörig.
