User comments	En la segunda mitad del siglo la industria siderúrgica tomó el relevo a la textil que había copado el protagonismo durante las primeras décadas del siglo y que ahora se vio afectada por la interrupción de la llegada de algodón como consecuencia de la guerra de secesión americana. El hierro necesitaba del carbón como fuente de energía para su fundición, de forma que las zonas más proclives a esta actividad fueron aquellas que contaban con importantes yacimientos de hierro y carbón La pionera fue la localidad malagueña de Ojén, en donde desde 1826 se explotaba una mina de hierro. Con su declive a mediados de la centuria por las dificultades para abastecerse de carbón mineral, la primacía fue asumida por Asturias, que desde 1864 supo sacar partido a la existencia en su cuenca minera estos minerales, aunque desde 1876, con la llegada de carbón de cok galés a Vizcaya, la hegemonía cambió de manos, estableciéndose un importante intercambio comercial entre el hierro que exportaba esta provincia a Cardiff y el carbón que importaba de allí. No ha de extrañar que a finales del siglo XIX el 70% de la producción nacional de hierro se localizara en el País Vasco, y que España se convirtiera en el principal exportador de hierro al resto de Europa, habida cuenta de la escasa demanda del mercado interior nacional, ni siquiera en relación con la expansión ferroviaria, cuyos raíles procedían en su mayor parte de países extranjeros. La producción pasó de 43.000 toneladas de lingotes de hierro y 37.000 de hierro dulce y acero en 1868 a 310.000 y 199.000 toneladas respectivamente en 1900.
