English: Ancient (15th c?) stained glass in the Thuborough Chapel of Sutcombe Church, Devon, showing the arms of de Esse of Thuborough (Argent, two chevrons sable) impaling Spencer of Spencer Combe, Crediton (Argent, on a bend sable two pairs of keys or, per Pole, Sir William (d.1635), Collections Towards a Description of the County of Devon, Sir John-William de la Pole (ed.), London, 1791, p.502). It does not however appear that a marriage of a de Esse husband to a Spencer wife ever took place. William Prideaux of Adeston married Alice Giffard, daughter and heiress of Stephen Giffard (fl. 1438) of Thuborough (whose family had inherited Thuborough from de Esse) who married firstly to Joan Spencer, daughter and heiress of John Spencer of Spencer Combe, (Sources: Vivian, Lt.Col.
