Description

Essexite from the Cretaceous of Quebec, Canada. (public display, Geology Department, Wittenberg University, Springfield, Ohio, USA)

Essexite is a scarce, alkaline, mafic, intrusive igneous rock. This sample comes from the core of an igneous intrusion at Mount Johnson in Quebec. The pluton intrudes Ordovician-aged siltstones, which have been contact metamorphosed into hornfels. Essexite at Mount Johnson ranges from finely crystalline to coarsely crystalline. It contains plagioclase feldspar, nepheline (a feldspathoid mineral), augite pyroxene, kaersutite amphibole, biotite mica, magnetite, apatite, plus olivine in areas. At its simplest, essexite is a gabbro that has nepheline.

Mount Johnson was formerly the site of a quarry that produced building stone and decorative stone.

Geologic province & age: Monteregian Hills Alkaline Province, early Albian Stage, late Early Cretaceous, ~111 Ma

Locality: unrecorded/undisclosed site on Mount Johnson (also known as "Mont Saint-Gregoire"), Monteregian Hills, east-southeast of Montreal, far-southern Quebec, southeastern Canada (45° 21' 25.30" North latitude, 73° 08' 54.00" West longitude)
