Description Introduced, warm-season, annual herb which exudes a milky white latex. Stems are decumbent to ascending, often with 1 or 2 bands of short curled hairs and to 60 cm tall. Leaves are elliptic-oblong and 6–30 mm long; margins are toothed; bases are asymmetric; both surfaces have scattered long hairs but becoming nearly hairless. Flowerheads consist of cyathia in axillary or terminal cymes, occasionally solitary; involucre 1–1.5 mm long; glands transversely ovate, yellow; appendages about 0.5 mm wide, white to pink. Capsules are 2–2.5 mm long and smooth. Flowering is mainly in summer. A native of America, it is often found on sands in disturbed areas.
