35 mm slide; color. Scientific Classification: Kingdom: Animalia; Phylum: Chordata; Class: Mammalia; Order: Carnivora; Family: Mustelidae; Genus: Meles; Genus species: Meles meles. Animal characteristics: Head-Body Length: 56-81 cm; Weight: 12 kg; Identification: The Eurasian badger has grayish-black upper parts, black undersides including legs and feet, and a white head and ear tips. The badger also has a black facial stripe; Habitat: Forests, grasslands; Diet: Omnivore: earthworms, small animals, bulbs, fruit, nuts; Reproduction: After mating in February-October, implantation of the fertilized egg is delayed by 3-9 months. Two to four young are born the following spring. Eurasian badgers live up to 25 years old in captivity; Social Structure: A family group of up to 12 individuals may live in a network of burrows, called setts. When traveling, however, badgers do so alone; Behavior: Eurasian badgers are nocturnal and playful creatures; Status: No special status.
