English: Smoke hung over much of Europe on October 16, 2017, when the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) acquired a true-color image of the region.
The smoky haze is heaviest over France, Belgium, Netherlands and Germany and, across the English Channel, England. Smoke can also be seen over the Adriatic Sea to the foothills of the Alps and the lowlands near the Carpathian Mountains. Skies over mainland Italy, the islands of Sicily, Sardinia, and Corsica, most of the Mediterranean Sea, and Algeria are relatively smoke-free. Bright white clouds in the northeast belong to the remnants of Hurricane Ophelia, which was spinning over the United Kingdom at the time the image was acquired. The smoke originated primarily in Spain and Portugal, where multiple fires continued to burn, fed by high temperatures and little rain. |
