English: 'Maiden fringe' and wedding gold suggest commenced within days of wedding (to Manet's engraver Henri Guerard). The title is preceded with value '46', corresponding with, and apparently relating to the 46th finished portrait since first collaboration with Manet. Feb 1879 commemorates exactly 10 years of association between Manet and his Student. Like Berthe before her, once married, Eva would never pose for the Master again. This painting would reciprocate Manet's gift to Eva of the first portrait of his only protege. |
