The Omoto Elementary School in the town of Iwaizumi, in Iwate Prefecture, is located right in front of a cliff more than 10 meters high. To evacuate to safer ground, children had to take a roundabout route, so an evacuation stairway 30 meters long was built in March 2009. The school building and the gymnasium were inundated by the March 11 tsunami."
