Description
Español: Al igual que los anfibios modernos, los antepasados remotos de las aves una vez tuvieron tres huesos en su parte superior del tobillo. Estos se convirtieron en animales de huevo terrestre (amniotos), con sólo dos huesos en esta región. En los dinosaurios, uno de ellos, el hueso del tobillo, presenta una proyección en punta, el “proceso ascendente”. Este rasgo también es observable en las aves, que son dinosaurios vivientes. Un nuevo estudio embriológico detallado de las aves muestra que su tobillo ha re-evolucionado un patrón de desarrollo de tipo anfibio, con tres elementos separados, uno de los cuales se convierte en el proceso ascendente de los dinosaurios.
