Description
English: Folium 001r from the Psalter of Eleanor of Aquitaine (ca. 1185) from the collection of the National Library of the Netherlands. It shows the Ex bibliotheca G.J. Gerard 1767. This is because it was owned by Georges-Joseph Gérard (1734-1814), a civil servant at the Brussels court with a passion for books. He acquired the manuscript before he was appointed secretary of the Société Littéraire, the predecessor of the Academy of Sciences and Letters, in 1769. He put his name in the book, dated 1767 (fol. 1r). His collection of books included about one hundred medieval manuscripts. The psalter was given the signature 'A 1', indicating the importance of the psalter for the owner.
Nederlands: Folium 001r van het Psalter van Eleonora van Aquitanië (ca. 1185) uit de collectie van de Koninklijke Bibliotheek. Er staat Ex bibliotheca G.J. Gerard 1767, want het psalter was toen in handen van Georges-Joseph Gérard, een gedreven ambtenaar aan het hof in Brussel met een passie voor boeken. Hij bemachtigde het psalter nog voordat hij in 1769 werd benoemd tot secretaris van de Sociéte Littéraire, de voorloper van de Academie der Wetenschappen en Letteren. Hij plaatste zijn naam voorin het boek, met het jaartal 1767 (fol. 1r). In de daarop volgende jaren bracht Gérard een grote verzameling boeken bijeen, waaronder ongeveer honderd middeleeuwse handschriften. Het psalter kreeg de signatuur 'A 1', wat iets zegt over het belang dat de nieuwe eigenaar aan het boek hechtte.
