Summary
editDescriptionExponential function plotted logarithmically and linearly.png |
English: When a math function is graphed with a logarithmic Y-axis (left pane), each Y-axis gridline differs by a factor of ten. At an X-axis value of 6, the Y-axis value of this exponential function is 1 E−05 (0.000 001, or 1⁄100,000). At 10 on the X-axis (off scale in both panes), the Y-axis value would be one-billionth (1 E−09). Even at 101 on the X-axis, the Y-axis value would equal one part in a googol; it is clear this exponential function can never reach zero. However, when the same exponential function is graphed linearly (right pane, where 1=1, 2=0.1, 3=0.01, and so forth, just as in the left pane), the asymptote of the curve misleadingly appears to reach the bound limit of zero past 4 on the X-axis. Note: This image is optically scaled for placement in articles so its text appears appropriately sized and the image is razor sharp when thumbs are specified with a width of either 496px (1⁄8th of full size) or 567px or (1⁄7th of full size). |
