Summary edit
DescriptionEyjafjallajökull.jpg |
We were driving west a little way past Seljalandsfoss when we saw this looming mountain, standing out from the greenery around it. It took us a while to realise we were looking a Eyjafjallajökull, the volcano that had caused so much havoc recently. The mountain itself is still covered in the soft brown ash but the farmland around it has now been cleared. The farmer here at Þorvaldseyri had obviously got tired of tourists going onto his land to collect ash, so he'd left a huge pot of it on the side of the road. Funnily enough, there's a link from me to the farm. The house I live in now was also, for a time, the home of Einar Benediktsson, an Icelandic poet. In 1905 Einar bought the farm from the second owner, Bjarni Jónsson and let it go to wrack and ruin. |
