Description A U.S. Navy McDonnell Douglas F/A-18C-24-MC Hornet (BuNo 163477) from strike fighter squadron VFA-81 Sunliners prepares for refueling from a U.S. Air Force tanker on 4 February 1991 during the 1991 Gulf War. The aircraft is armed with AIM-9L Sidewinder missiles, AIM-7 Sparrows, and Mk 83 bombs. VFA-81 was assigned to Carrier Air Wing 17 (CVW-17) aboard the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga (CV-60) for a deployment to the Mediterranean and the Red Sea in support of operations "Desert Shield" and "Desert Storm" from 7 August 1990 to 28 March 1991. 163477 was the second VFA-81 aircraft to receive the tactical number AA-403 on this deployment. The first one, BuNo 163484, had been shot dwon by an Iraqi MiG-25PD on 17 January 1991, the pilot being killed. Three years later the F-18C 163477 later collided with a VF-103 F-14B after launching from USS Saratoga on 12 February 1994. The F-14 crashed, both crew ejecting safely. 163477 landed with a portion of the wing missing and was later repaired.
