Description A U.S. Navy McDonnell F4H-1 Phantom II fighter from fighter squadron VF-74 Be-Devilers launching from the aircraft carrier USS Saratoga (CVA-60), in August 1961. VF-74 was the first operational U.S. Navy F-4 Phantom II fleet squadron and was undertaking carrier qualifications aboard the Saratoga, having transitioned from the Douglas F4D-1 Skyray since March 1961. VF-74 would begin its first operational deployment aboard the USS Forrestal (CVA-59) as part of Carrier Air Group 8 (CVG-8) on 3 August 1962. In 1962 the F4H-1 would, under the unified designation system, become the F-4B.
