Newspaper clipping :

Death and Funeral of a Distinguished Conduct Medalist. With the [?] unflinching courage that won for him his laurels on the field of Battle, Frederic William Davies, a corporal in the Australian Imperial Force, bore the sufferings to which he succumbed at the War Hospital, Clopton, on Thursday. Twenty-one years of age, he relinquished a good appointment in the country of his adoption to serve the motherland, and he is laid to rest in our peaceful, well-ordered cemetery "until that day." He was one of the convoy which arrived here during the early hours of Saturday, August 31st, having been grievously wounded in the allied advance. It had been necessary to amputate one of his legs in France, and the other leg was badly injured. Medical skill and patient nursing were his to the fullest extent, but septic poisoning intervened, and the Great Reaper claimed him. The funeral took place on Monday afternoon, the Rev. F. H. Hodgson conducting a short service at Clopton House porch. This was attended by the deceased's fellow patients and as many of the staff whose duties allowed of temporary cessation. The cortege proceeded to the parish church, where the customary protions of the Church of England burial rites were impressively read by the chaplain of the hospital, and the organist (Mr. C. F. Bloomer) gave a majestic rendering of the Dead March in Saul. The service at the graveside was attended by the Hon. Mrs. Hodgson and the Hon. Mrs. A. de Grey (hon. secretary and quartermaster of the War Hospital, Clopton), a representative from the Australian headquarters in London.

Handwritten :

Charlie McIntosh applied for compassionate leave, visited Stratford-On-Avon, placed some glass covered wreath on grave of his best pal, visited the V.A.D. Hospital where Fred died, interviewed the Sister who attended to his mate and thanked her on behalf of his brother & self.
