Summary edit

Description A U.S. Navy Douglas F4D-1 Skyray of fighter squadron VF-74 Be-devilers refueling for the first time from a Douglas AD-6 Skyraider of attack squadron VA-65 Tigers. A second F4D-1 and a Vought F8U-1P Crusader of VFP-62 Det.33 Fighting Photos are also visible. All aircraft were assigned to Carrier Air Group 6 (CVG-6) for a deployment to the Mediterranean Sea aboard the U.S. aircraft carrier USS Intrepid (CVA-11) from 4 August 1960 to 17 February 1961. Note the refueling method on the F4D-1: as the probe-and-drouge refueling method had not been invented when the F4D was designed it was later equipped with a drop tank that had an inflight refueling probe. The drawback of this eqipment was, of course, that the plane could not be refueled anymore, when the drop tanks had been jettisoned.
