Im Bild die Überreste eines besonders stattlich gewachsenen Exemplars, Foto vom April 2017.English: Frankfurt-am-Main borough of Schwanheim, Germany: Schwanheimer Alteichen is the official name of a group of about 30, on average five centuries old oak trees (quercus) in the cityʼs municipal forest, Frankfurter Stadtwald. Until the 19th century, every autumn local farmers would have their herds of domestic pigs feed from the acorns.
The coarse woody debris of the Old Oaks of Schwanheim hosts a number of rare species of wild animals; among them the lucanus cervus beetle, the common noctule, and the tawny owl. The photo shows debris of an exceptionally large Schwanheim oak tree; picture taken in April 2017. |
