Description
English: Fairleigh S. Dickinson, Jr. (seated) shares time with friend, William Waterway Marks at a Vineyard Environmental Research, Inst. (VERI) lighthouse fundraiser on Martha's Vineyard.

Fairleigh S. Dickinson (12/9/1919-10/12/1996) summered on the island of Martha's Vineyard at his parents' home in Edgartown since the 1930s. Dickinson was an active sailor, and was involved with preserving the island's environment; historical buildings; and lighthouses. He co-founded VERI with William Waterway Marks in 1984. Besides saving three of the island's lighthouses in the 1980s, VERI also received federal, state and private grants to undertake studies in acid rain; aquifer pollution; coastal erosion; wetland studies, and water quality of Edgartown Harbor. Dickinson's father, Fairleigh S. Dickinson, was co-founder of Becton Dickinson, and the founder of Fairleigh Dickinson University - New Jersey's largest private university.

William Waterway (formerly William E. Marks) graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU) in 1973. While an undergraduate, Marks received grants from FDU and other sources to undertake independent studies of fish kills; pollution of rivers, and environmental law from the Conservation Law Foundation. Marks located to Martha's Vineyard in 1978 after undertaking a two-year horseback trek across America he called "RIDE FOR NATURE."
