| Description | This historic Greek Revival-style House is located on Fairmount Avenue atop Knox Hill in Cincinnati’s South Fairmount neighborhood. Constructed in the mid-19th Century, this house likely dates to the early on during the time in which the neighborhood was transitioning between a rural farming community and a suburb of Cincinnati. The area became known as Fairmount during the late 1840s, when the Fairmount Baptist Theological Seminary was constructed atop the hill at the site of modern-day St. Clair Heights Park, and the land was subdivided and sold with the intention of funding the construction and operation of the seminary, located in a large, four floor Gothic Revival-style building. The house is a prime example of the Greek Revival style, and one of the most intact and prime examples of the style I know of in the Greater Cincinnati Area. Today, the house remains well-preserved, and shows the early ambitions for the neighborhood, which did not pan out as the original developers hoped, with the seminary going bankrupt and becoming a German shooting club, which burned down in 1888. Many structures, including this house and many cottages on the hill around Fairmount Avenue, are reflective of this area’s unique and interesting history, but are not currently protected by historic preservation designation. |
