Na dan početka jeseni, takozvanu ravnodnevicu, koja obično počinje 23. rujna, dan i noć traju po 12 sati, pa postupno nakon tog datuma dani postaju za jednu minutu kraći od noći, a noći jednu minutu duže od dana. Postoje dva razdoblja u jesen: rana jesen traje od 23. rujna do kraja listopada (početkom studenog), a kasna jesen traje od početka studenog, sve do 21. prosinca.
