of its treasures, all thosegraces and rare endowments which are commonly scat-tered among several during a long period of time, lethim contemplate Raphael Sanzio dUrbino. His peculiar element was grace and beauty of form,in as far as this is the expression of high moralpurity. In the Madonnas and Holy Families, of whichhe painted so large a number, his peculiar powers aremost fully developed. These offer many interestingpoints of comparison ; some of them are simply natural,others of a more profound conception. They are not,however, all from his own hand; many, though fromhis designs, were only retouched and completed byhimself. Raphael received his early education in art from hisfather, Giovanni Santi, who was a painter of consid-erable distinction, but he died when his son was in hiseleventh year. In accordance with his wishes, how-ever, Raphael entered the school of Pietro Pcrugino,at Perugia, in 1495, when he was about twelve yearsold. There he remained till 1504, and was chiefly

His works are gen-erally divided into three classes: his first style, whenunder the influence of Peruginos manner; his second,when he painted in Florence, from 1504 to 1508; andhis third style, which is distinguished in the worksexecuted after he settled in Rome. In all these dif-ferent styles he has left works of great excellence. Raphael also filled an important place as an archi-tect, and it is believed that he executed some worksin marble. Among the first independent paintings executed byRaphael, are a Crucifixion with four Saints, formerlyin a gallery at Rome, now in the collection of LordWard in London, and a large altar-piece, an Adorationof the Kings, now in the Berlin Museum. Anotherimportant picture of this time, showing the progress ofthe painter, is the Coronation of the Virgin, now in theVatican. After these works he appears to have quittedthe school of Pcrugino
