Description
English: Fatal Collision at Sea between the Steam-Ships Jesmond and Lord Elgin. Illustration for The Illustrated Times, 14 May 1870.

The Earl of Elgin steamship was run into by the steamship Jesmond ( United Kingdom) and sank in the North Sea 8 nautical miles (15 km) off Huntcliffe Foot, Yorkshire with the loss of eight of the twenty people on board. Survivors were rescued by Jesmond. Earl of Elgin was on a voyage from Sunderland, County Durham to Bordeaux, Gironde, France.
