Många insektsarter, främst skalbaggar, är beroende av gamla, döende eller döda träd för sin överlevnad.

Innan skalbaggarna förvandlas till vuxna individer lever de som larver inuti murkna träd och grenar. Larverna är viktiga som mat åt bland annat hackspettar.
