Description
English: Flt Lt Fazal Elahi, who was born on 1 Jan, 1944. Loaded with passion and avidity, he joined the illustrious ranks of Fighter Pilots on 10 Jan 1964 and later graduated with flying colours. His expertise in gunnery and air

combat earned him great respect among his peers. During the 1971 war, he was a part of No 26 squadron which was equipped with the formidable Sabre aircraft. Despite his low experience, he volunteered for all strike missions deep inside enemy territory. He was also a part of the daring team that struck the first blow to IAF bases of Srinagar and Avantipura and subsequently was part of every strike package till 7 Dec, 1971. On the morning of 8 Dec, he climbed the cockpit of his venerable Sabre for one last time for a strike mission to Chamb-Jaurian sector. Undaunted by the dangers of the mission, the formation dashed towards the target. As he dove for the first run, the heavy anti-aircraft guns opened up and created a web of formidable fire over the target. Despite heavy fire, Fazal continued his mission. After the first pass, once he came in for the second run, a heavy shell struck his aircraft and the great legend embraced the destiny of martyrdom that every soldier wish for.

Despite his youth, he displayed exemplary courage and left a legacy worthy of being emulated by later generations. He was awarded Sitara-i-Juraat for his courage, bravery and devotion to service.
