Description Felix Varela Morales (1788 - 1853) was a Cuban-born Roman Catholic priest who lived and worked in the US from the early 1820s. In 1827 he founded the Church of the Immigrant in New York's poor Five Points district. The church later became known as the Church of the Transfiguration and the area became Chinatown. This plaque memorializing Father Varela was affixed to the church's exterior wall in the 1980s by members of the Cuban American community.
