He was imprisoned during the First World War for his active pacifism, although he put aside his pacifist principles to become involved in the Spanish Civil War and supported the fight against Hitler. Although he had something of a love/hate relationship with the Labour Party, he was Labour MP for Eton and Slough from 1950 until 1964, when he was made a life peer. He was also a founding member of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament. His statue stands at the western end of Red Lion Square.
