Efter att ha avslutat sin verksamhet som arkitekt ägnade sig Ferdinand Boberg (1860–1946) åt ett omfattande projekt med titeln ”Svenska bilder från 1900-talets början”. Boberg såg den gamla svenska kulturbebyggelsen hotas av industrialisering och modernisering, och lyckades ordna finansiering för att under åren 1915–1924 kunna teckna av äldre bebyggelse i städer och på landsbygden runt hela Sverige. Bobergs hustru Anna följde med på resorna och förde dagbok med ingående beskrivningar av de platser som paret besökte. Resultatet blev ett planschverk med ett tusental kolteckningar.

De 3 026 blyertsskisser som låg till grund för kolteckningarna förvaras i Nordiska museets arkiv och reprofotograferades år 2003 som en del av projektet ”I Ferdinands fotspår”. Detta syftade till att inventera miljöerna som Ferdinand Boberg avbildade för att undersöka hur de såg ut vid 2000-talets början.
