English: Festival of the Virgin Mary.Kremasti, Rhodes, Greece August 2013
The Feast of the Assumption begins on August 15 and culminates on August 23. At Panagia Katholiki in Kremasti, Rodos, pilgrims converge from all of the islands around Rhodes. They bring gifts to lay before the Virgin's icon. These include oil, beeswax, candles, jewelry, fabrics or replicas of items prayed for, such as body parts and money. Inside the church, sick people lie near the image hoping for a cure. Outside, costumed dancers perform an ancient sword dance. There are vendor booths and amusements for children. On August 23, naval officers carry the Virgin's image in procession. Some are shown here. |
