English: Ffestiniog Railway, above Ddault Station When the Ffestiniog Railway first proposed to reopen the old slate carrying narrow gauge line through to Blaenau Ffestiniog it faced what must have seemed an insuperable obstacle: part of the old formation had been flooded by a reservoir that formed part of the Tanygrisiau pump storage power station scheme. To overcome this, funded partly by compensation from the Central Electricity Generating Board awarded after a prolonged legal battle, a deviation was constructed largely using voluntary labour in the 1970s. From Ddault station this necessitated a spiral arrangement to gain height - unique to any railway in Britain. Here a train to Blaenau Ffestiniog commences the spiral climb. |
