Indeed GeneralFloyd, the commander of this division of thesouthern troops had worked rapidly and thrownup along the shore of this swift mountainstream, defenses which were formidable. It was not long after the men had obeyedthe longed-for command when there was a sud-den change in the plans and the order abruptlywas given for the men to advance and rush thedefenses on the opposite side of the stream.There was a sharp call by the bugler, the regi-ment was speedily in marching order and in abrief time came the word for them to advance. How strong the feeling was among these sol-diers may be understood from the fact that asthe men leaped to their feet and at the word oftheir officer, darted forward, a wild cheer arosefrom the ranks. It was now that the peril of the young colorbearer became clear even to the boyish leader.There was no hesitation, however, nor was therea moments delay.
