Habitat type: Maritime hammocks Flowering period: Spring Pollinators: Wasps Size: Up to 20-25 ft in height Location in Park: Ft. Caroline National Memorial- Hammock Trail Information: The Timucua used this plant to make their “black drink.” This drink contained large amounts of caffeine and was used as a purgative for ceremonial purposes. The fruits attract various species of birds, black bears, and small mammals.
