Description
English: Filfa is another islet in the Maltese archipelago. Small barren uninhabited islet South of Malta and Filflu a small islet southwest of Filfa. Historically Filfa was part of mainland of Malta ...but with rising water levels ..it now stand alone. Its name is derived from the Arabic word fulfula ...meaning pepper due to its size and shape seen from above.

Filfla serves as a unique habitat to many animals and plants. A nature preserve was established in 1988 and permissions are to be obtained to land on the island.

Filfa is a listed Natural 2000 site and protected through the International Birds Directive and the Maltese Flora and Fauna habitats directive.
