Summary

Description
English: Filling Whittington Lock, Staffordshire. The locks on this part of the Staffordshire and Worcestershire Canal have three underwater "paddles" to let water into the lock from above: two ground paddles (one each side of the canal) and one large gate paddle actually set into the gate.

For an ascending narrowboat in the lock, especially a boat of fifty feet and more in length, it is wise to open the ground paddles first, then the gate paddle when it is considered safe. Reversing this order can result in the boat being inundated from the front, as the water enters through the gate VERY fiercely as is seen here. This lock is already about half full; it raises the level by 9 feet 9 inches (2.9 metres). Compare this with 1027669 .

Not all locks have a gate paddle in the top gate, though they are usual in the bottom mitre gates.
