Deutsch: «Durch die chemische Zersetzung bei der Alterung oder falshen Lagerung von Azetatfilm bildet sich Essigsaure. Dies nennt man das Essigsauresyndrom. Die Folgen kann man nicht nur riechen, sondern auch sehen: Befallenes Material baut sich ab, es schrumpft, wird bruchig und die bildtragende Schicht lost sich ab oder verklebt. Wenn eine Filmrolle nach Essig riecht, wird es hochste Zeit zu handeln und den Film zu sichern, da der Zersetzungsprozess und die Schaden am analogen Material unumkehrbar sind. Italiano: L'acido acetico si forma per decadimento chimico durante l'invecchiamento o per errata conservazione del film di acetato. Questa è chiamata sindrome dell'aceto. Il materiale affetto dalla sindrome si sfalda, si restringe, diventa fragile e l'emulsione si stacca o aderisce creando un unico blocco. Quando un rullo di pellicola odora di aceto, è giunto il momento di agire e salvare il film, poiché il processo di decomposizione e il danneggiamento del materiale analogico sono irreversibili.
