| Description |
English: Fire Service College The memorial to the RAF and the main entrance to the Fire Service College are seen in this view. The airfield was built on a 500 acre site belonging to the Batsford Estate and was a base for Wellington bombers during the war. The airfield was operational from 1941 until 1955 when it became a school for the RAF fire-fighting reservists until 1959. Civilian fire fighters were trained from 1959 and the Fire Service College was established. A great deal of new building work took place in the late 1960s. |
