Description
English: The California fire season has been off to an early and explosive start, with CalFire reporting at least 18 major fires already in the 2018 fire season. Typically, the fire season begins in mid-June.

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of fires burning across Northern California on June 24, 2018.

The largest fire is the destructive Pawnee Fire. This fire ignited on June 23 at Pawnee Rd & New Long Valley Rd, northeast of Clearlake Oaks in Lake County. By June 27 the fire had consumed 13,500 acre, according to Cal Fire, and was only 25% contained. 600 structures are threatened and 22 have been destroyed. CalFire’s June 27 report also states, “The fire burned very actively throughout the day in the Spring Valley area, north east of Clearlake Oaks in Lake County. The fire is being driven by low relative humidity, erratic winds, and above normal temperatures. Expanded evacuation orders are in effect for the entire Spring Valley area and residents are reminded to heed all evacuation orders. Additional resources are en route to the incident.” This is the southernmost and largest fire in this image.
