Description
English: Smoke poured from multiple fires in Western Australia in early December 2016. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite captured this true-color image on December 9.

Several red hotspots mark areas where the thermal bands on the MODIS instrument detected high temperatures. When combined with typical smoke, such hotspots are diagnostic for actively burning fire.

The most remarkable smoke can be seen in the near the coast in the south of Western Australia where a broad plume of heavy smoke rises from a pair of large hotspots in the forestland of Mount Frankland National Park. The plume then blows southward over the Great Australian Bight.

On December 8 a smoke alert had been issued by the Department of Parks and Wildlife in Western Australia. The heavy smoke is coming from prescribed fires – fires deliberately set by the government to remove brush and overgrowth in anticipation of potential brushfires that could be ignited during the upcoming fire season in this region.
