English: On July 14, 2017, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard NASA’s Aqua satellite acquired a true-color image of dozens of fires burning across Alaska and northwestern Canada.

Thanks to a dry, warm, winter followed by more heat and little rain in the spring and summer, the fire danger in much of the northern United States and Canada has been rated “extreme”. Extreme fire danger indicates that dry, intensely flammable vegetation can be easily sparked into a wildfire, and that conditions exist for a wildfire to expand rapidly to damage large areas of forest, grasslands, and human habitation.

In this image, actively burning fire (marked by red hot spots and smoke) cluster in several locations. From west to east, these are western Alaska, United States; acreage that borders the United States and Canada; several areas in the Yukon Territory, and near Great Bear Lake in Northwest Territories. Smoke billows over the entire scene including the Beaufort Sea.
