English: On January 25, 2018, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on board NASA’s Aqua satellite flew over the southeastern United States and acquired a true-color image which showed dozens of fires burning across the region. Multiple clusters of fires are scattered over Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and a few are also found in North Carolina. The fires are marked in red in this image. The time of year, location and distribution of these fires suggests that they may be agricultural fires – a type of fire that is deliberately set and contained with the intention to manage land. In parts of Florida, for example, agricultural fires may be connected to the sugar cane harvest, as farmers burn the plants to remove leaves from the cane. Winter is also the time that farmers in the southeast use fire to remove stubble from old crops to renew the land for spring planting.
