Summary edit
DescriptionFirst Baptist Church, Batavia, New York - 20210110.jpg |
English: First Baptist Church, 306 East Main Street, Batavia, New York, January 2021. Dedicated in 1891 after a nearly two-year construction process, this church sports a distinguished Richardsonian Romanesque design wherein the eye is immediately drawn to the enormous rose window facing East Main Street, with its delightful but simple geometrical plate tracery, or perhaps to the handsome bell tower at right, topped consecutively by decorative corbeling and a pyramidal copper roof and fronted by an even taller narrow conical spire. But look more closely and an even greater richness of architectural detail makes itself apparent. Witness, for example, the trios of loop windows set in the roof gables, which find echoes in the even taller and narrower, round-arched openings in the belfry; the pedimented entrances with stylized pillars flanking either side of the building; or perhaps the rugged, ponderous look of the façade, with blocks of rough-textured gray sandstone in a color contrast with the red Medina sandstone used as trim. Chronologically the fourth church in Batavia, First Baptist traces its origins to a Sunday school founded in 1836 and which met at a location on Jackson Street; it had 24 members at the outset, and double that number by the end of the year. Extensive renovations to their present building beginning in 2018 have included repairs to the bell tower, the replacing of the stained glass windows on the west elevation of the building (at right; not shown), and the reshingling of the roof. |
