| Description | The first U.S. Navy Vought F8U-2N Crusader (BuNo 147035) in flight. The F8U-2N (after 1962: F-8D) was an all-weather version with an uprated J57-P-20 engine with 18,000 lbf (80 kN) of afterburning thrust, a landing system which automatically maintained present airspeed during approach, and the AN/APQ-83 radar. The unguided rocket pack was replaced with an additional fuel tank. The first flight of the F8U-2N was on 16 February 1960, 152 were built between June 1960 and January 1962. |
